MIRANSHAH: A key Taliban commander, Asmatullah Shaheen, was killed in an ambush in volatile North Waziristan region, SAMAA reported Monday.
Confirming the high-profile killing, security officials said a vehicle carrying five Taliban fighters was coming from Pak-Afghan border when it was fired upon in Darga Mandi area of North Waziristan’s Ghulam Khan tehsil.
The attack left Taliban commander Asmatullah Shaheen and four of his associates dead on the spot.
Shaheen was appointed interim chief of banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) after former TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud’s death in a missile strike last year.
Asmatullah Shaheen, also known as Asmatullah Bhittani, was considered to be a leading figure in attack on Mullazai Fort in Tank, South Waziristan and killing security forces in North Waziristan, officials said.
