Behind the potential shutdown of the US government

Republicans in the House of Representatives – and their allies in the Senate – have been calling for the healthcare law to be repealed or amended in return for their support in passing a normally uncontroversial short term government funding bill. Failure to get that measure through by midnight Washington time will lead to the closure of all non-essential federal services . More than 700 thousand staff could be sent home on unpaid leave, the first such shutdown in the US for 17 years. Unless the two parties can break their stalemate and reach a compromise of course. But what are the chances of that at this late stage?
