OSLO, (PIC)-- The European Network expressed its grave concern at the Israeli detention of the Palestinian olympic team goalkeeper Omar Khaled and national team player Muhammad Saadi Nimer from the West Bank. The network said in a statement that arresting Palestinian sportsmen with no charge represents a flagrant violation of the international and humanitarian laws. It urged all concerned bodies, particularly the International Federation of Football Association - FIFA - and the International Association of professional soccer players to intervene in order to release the players, who have been detained since last February. Mohammed Hamdan, head of the network, stated that the network is launching a campaign in solidarity with the two prisoners during the 2012 London Olympics, which opened in London last month. This is not the first time the Israeli occupation forces arrest Palestinian sportsmen as they had previously detained martyr Zakariya Issa and the football player Mahmoud Sarsak, who was released after a hunger strike that lasted 96 days. |
